I had this book on my shelf for
about a year before I actually read it. Someone said, "Have you ever
heard of the book 'Of Witches'?" and it rang a bell as something I'd
picked up and never gotten around to reading. On the recommendation
of this person, I snagged it from the shelf and gave it a read. I
was pleased enough to put it on the required reading list of my Wicca 101
class right away.
Thompson takes a gentle hand with
the Craft, exploring it on a very fundamental level that takes solitary
practitioners on a tour of the very basics, deftly walking a fine line
between over exposure (giving the reader too much to absorb at once) and
under protection (giving them just enough info to hang themselves).
The author does a fine job laying the foundation for a healthy Craft life
while gently encouraging the reader to celebrate the Goddess in every part
of their life, incorporating magic into their day to day life as a way of
life rather than something done exclusive of all other life processes.
The subjects addressed are very
"level appropriate," yet complete and inspired. If I weren't already
a Witch, I'd want to be after reading this book. It is definitely
one of the best "Intro to Wicca" books I've come across and I highly
recommend it to any burgeoning Witch or even as a legitimate overview to
give to your loved ones upon your emergence from the Broom Closet.
