Ann Moura is, by her account, thirty plus years a solitary practitioner and a third generation Witch.  From her mother and grandmother, Moura learned the basics of Witchcraft from a daily life, folk magic perspective and combined that with the elements of Wiccan traditions and Ceremonial practices that appealed to her, producing this practical and comprehensive guide.  This is the first book in her Green Witchcraft series.

Moura goes to great lengths to show how her Green approach is separate from more traditional Wiccan practices, but never really succeeds in differentiating the two.  Her strengths lie in her obvious fascination with history and research into the development of modern day Witchcraft, and in her fluid writing style.  Neither overly simplistic nor excessively scholarly, Moura covers a tremendous amount of material without getting bogged down in detail or wandering off on academic tangents.

This book has everything the student of Witchcraft needs to begin the development of a personal practice, and enough background material is presented for a good understanding of each aspect.  Moura lists the magickal correspondences and uses for colors and herbs, describes the construction and use of magickal tools and explains the basics of ritual construction.    She covers the meaning and derivations of the traditional rede, charge, rune and blessings. The basics of Tarot reading and other methods of divination are revealed, and the Esbats and each Sabbat explained in detail, with workable sample rituals given for each.

Overall, quite comfortable to read, ambitious and comprehensive in scope, this book provides an excellent guide to the basics of modern Witchcraft and practice in harmony with nature.
