This book, a recent addition to Ann Moura’s immensely successful Green Witchcraft series, is an exploration of the nature and practice of magic.  While it repeats some of the material found in her other books, and frequently references them, this work goes into detail about the mechanics, possibilities and responsibilities of a magickal practice.

While she doesn’t give any example spells in this book, Moura explains how readers might go about construction of their own spells.  She describes the nature of magickal energy and how to work with it, and explains Elementals in detail.  Moura helps the beginner discern between the purposes of drawing, repelling and containing, and the methods for comparative, directive and transference magic.   Casting and opening a circle, the consecration and use of magickal tools,  the construction of a Book of Shadows, even cakes and ale are discussed to enable to the reader to combine all the aspects of spell creation into a successful whole.  Extensive lists of magickal correspondences are included in a group of useful appendices.

In this book more than in the others of her series, Moura succeeds in defining some of the connection to nature that she believes sets Green Magic apart from more traditional Wiccan approaches.  Written with her usual scholarly yet friendly style, this is a comprehensive guide to Green magic and spell construction that will give the beginner a solid foundation in theory and practice and the more advanced student a fascinating refresher course.
